Welcome!

Welcome to Arviq School, in Platinum, Alaska. We are located on the edge of the Bering Sea, on a small peninsula at the mouth of Goodnews Bay, in southwest Alaska, about 120 air miles southwest of Bethel, Alaska. Platinum is one of the most beautiful places in Alaska, set against the scenic backdrop of snow-covered mountains, arctic tundra, with a creek feeding into an enormous shallow bay which then opens out into the Bering Sea. It is a place of plentiful year-round subsistence opportunities: plants (kapuqaqs, beach greens, tundra tea); grass (purple, yellow, green); animals (moose, caribou, porcupine, seal, sea lions, whales, eagles, waterfowl/ducks/geese, beavers, five species of salmon, trout, halibut); and berries (raspberries, salmonberries, blueberries, blackberries, huckleberries).

Our community has approximately 54 residents and our school, 7 students.
While we are a public K-12, we currently have K-8 students. This school is a place, focused on educational processes, specifically how to learn and putting it into action within district parameters, mandates, and provided curriculum resources. Students take responsibility for their growth, achievements and successes. The students are ever-preparing for the world beyond the village boundaries but also for the traditional values of the Yup'ik culture within the village. To accomplish this all students must feel safe and respectful of themselves, their families, their school, their community, their culture and the environment.

We work hard and play hard in our "one room, multi-age, multi-grade schoolhouse" where a quality education is provided and received. There is real collaboration and support amongst the students and staff member. Everyone has something to learn and to contribute! Everyone is a teacher and a student! The students participate in not only their regular academic day but also Afterschool extra-curricular and co-curricular activities, programing and sports such as: Healthy Futures, College and Career preparation activities; Science Fair; FIRST Robotics; Yupik Dance; JH Speech; Spelling Bee; Cross Country; Native Youth Olympics (NYO); Migrant Education; Tutoring (group and individual); and Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program (ANSEP) academies and explorations.
