HISTORY OF PLATINUM SCHOOL

The Platinum School was re-opened in October 2007 after being closed in the spring of 2001 because of declining enrollment.

Students returned home from attending schools in other communities and the students who were being home schooled, enrolled in the newly reopened Platinum school. There are currently twenty students enrolled in grades K-12.

Platinum School is part of the Lower Kuskokwim School District (LKSD) which is located in Bethel, Alaska. We now have two teachers. Henrietta Callewaert teaches K-4th Grade and Devin Thurston teaches 6-10th Grade. All students participate in the regular LKSD curriculum, reading, writing and math. LKSD is a standards based education school district .

The elementary students benefit by direct instruction from a classroom teacher. The high school students have some classes via direct instruction and some classes through the video tele-conference (VTC) delivery method, where they are taught by a teacher from the studios in the district office in Bethel.

High School students can participate in extracuricular activities such as cross country running, Native Youth Olympics (NYO) and speech. With so few students it isn’t possible to participate in team sports.
